"If you could pinpoint the exact moment
when you knew you wanted to be a comic,
when would that be?, was a question
Simone Campbell came across when reading
another comic's profile page. The other
question was, "What was the first album
you remember buying with your very own
money?"
Simone, who along with countless others,
had thrown her hat into the ring to win an
audition for the Logo Channel's "Big Gay
Sketch Show"....and it didn't take long for
the brash and busty San Francisco comic to
answer; "Robin Williams" I was surprised
that I didn't have to think about it more. But
I remember clearly going out as soon as I
had the money and buying Robin Williams
album, "Reality, what a concept" Simone
remembered every single word on that
album, every bit, every joke, every wacky
voice. For a short time she even dressed
just a little too much like the actor/comic
circa "Mork and Mindy" days, even down to
the rainbow suspenders. "Not the best
outfit to wear the very first time...and only
time..you decide to go to a school dance."
Years later, and sans the rainbow
suspenders, Simone finds herself in a dual
role...of comic and activist. "I tried to
separate the two, and I failed. I figured,
why fight it? I feel like I've been given two
gifts. Being able to make people laugh...and
having an intense passion for standing up to
those who do harm."
Don't get this brash-tongued and tatted
comic wrong...she'll knock back the XXX
rated comedy with the best of them. A habit
that has gotten her into trouble. "Some folks
have sensitive ears. But it's like TV..if you
don't like what you hear...then change the
F*@k$n channel!" But she remembers to
weave into her daily life enough good
intention to sustain her through the tough
times....and hopefully sustain the community
around her.
Last year, Simone opened for Jenny McNulty
at the Russian River Women's Weekend.
She has performed all over the Bay Area,
and is a regular at Harvey's, named after
slain and first openly gay San Fransisco
Supervisor, Harvey Milk, she's been on
Pirate Cat Radio, The John Miller Show with
Susan Maletta and continues to make her
mark despite her late start in comedy and
ever- increasing hot flashes. In December of
2009, Simone made her New York debut at
the New York Comedy Club, and in March of
2010, will once again throw her hat into the
ring when she auditions for NBC's "Last
Comic Standing"
"Simone is exciting, energetic, full of life. She
warms the audience up to each other. Not
an easy thing to do. Killer smile."
